Sydney Teapot Show 2024 Lucy Be
In my latest series of teapots, I explore the rich narrative and emotional depth of the ‘Toy Story’ universe, drawing inspiration from its beloved characters and themes. Each piece reflects a unique aspect of the films, allowing me to translate their stories into tangible form.
‘Bo Peep’ serves as a focal point for my exploration of softness and vulnerability. The incorporation of removable fabric embellishments speaks to her gentle nature, while the lumina porcelain’s matte finish enhances the tactile quality of the piece, inviting viewers to engage with it intimately.
The ‘Daydreamers Wallpaper’, inspired by the whimsical wallpaper, embodies a sense of playfulness. Crafting the soft, puffy clouds was a joyful process that encapsulates the lighthearted spirit of the film. This teapot represents not just a functional object, but a visual narrative that invites the viewer to dream and imagine.
The ‘Reach for the Stars,’ teapot embraces a striking contrast with silky mid-fire black clay, evoking the vastness of the night sky. The sweeping white stars guide the eye across the surface, creating a sense of movement and aspiration. This piece is a reflection of ambition and the courage to explore new horizons, mirroring the journeys of the toys themselves.
Through this series, I aimed to push my technical boundaries, experimenting with stained porcelain, homemade stamps, and a new handle form. The choice to forego glaze on the exterior challenged me to achieve a higher level of finish, revealing the raw beauty of the porcelain. The cohesive design across the three teapots fosters a sense of unity, celebrating the connection between them, much like the bonds formed among the characters in ‘Toy Story.’
This collection encapsulates my journey as an artist, as I, too, step out of my comfort zone to explore new creative territories. I invite viewers to engage with these pieces not just as functional objects, but as reflections of stories that resonate with us all.
