Paper, Play Pots - A solo Exhibition
Artist statement
‘Paper, Play. Pots’ was born out of my immersion into a timeless world of fairytales, regal costumes and eccentric lifestyles, where all things are possible.
As a child I played with tea sets, and as an adult I make teapots which encourage an escape into the imagination.
The teapot has excited me for many years, as it offers opportunities to tell a story by bringing all the clay elements together in a technical puzzle.
Each teapot began its story on a piece of paper.
The pieces were made from porcelain on the wheel, then altered with the addition of slab constructed details. This approach presents an opportunity to manipulate the thrown elements, creating individual pieces with quirky finishes.
Detailed surfaces were created through coloured slips, glazes, atmospheric firings and lustres. The addition of wire and turned timber handles speaks of the nostalgic copper kettle in the home, offering playfulness in its use.
This is an invitation for you to reconsider the ordinary and be carried into your imagination.
